A Week in the Life of a Design and Marketing Apprentice

A Week in the Life of a Design and Marketing Apprentice

I’m Abby, and I recently started an apprenticeship at Storm12! Choosing an apprenticeship can be a difficult decision if you’re not completely sure what industry you want to go into. As a creative person who loves graphic design and also has an interest in marketing, I decided to start a marketing apprenticeship with a focus on design. Now, as a Marketing and Design Apprentice at Storm12, there are so many different projects I get to be a part of. I work on a mix of creative tasks, client projects, and team collaborations that keep things exciting and challenging. Here’s a look at what a typical week looks like for me!

Monday: Apprenticeship/Study Day

Once a week, I have a study day. This day can change but tends to be a Monday or a Thursday. My study days are dedicated to focusing on my apprenticeship and assignments. This can include completing assignment work from home or attending classroom sessions at the training centre in Brighton. It’s a great way to start or end the week with a fresh mindset and set goals for the days ahead.

Tuesday: Client Work

On Tuesdays, I’m in the office with the Storm12 team, working on a range of client projects. I spend the day creating visuals for social media, designing graphics, and editing videos. Occasionally, I’m also tasked with working on Storm12’s social media content. I love how every project brings something new to the table, and it helps me sharpen my design skills every week.

Wednesday: Projects and Training

Wednesday brings more project work for various different clients. Something I recently worked on was creating new logo concepts for a client who wanted a full rebrand. I planned out my ideas by drawing some initial concepts, before using Illustrator to create my final designs. The finished concepts will then be presented to the client who will choose their favourite, or request that any changes be made.

Wednesdays are also a good day to get some training in. Whether it’s watching a YouTube tutorial on After Effects or completing an online graphic design course, there’s always more for me to learn and ways for me to develop my current skills!

During the week, I look forward to seeing a frequent Storm12 visitor at the office (as you can see below!) I love having a quick break to relax in the office garden with the cat.

Once a week I also take my ‘exercise hour’. This is something Storm12 offers to their employees to give them an hour of work time each week to exercise. I’ve been using mine to get back into running!

Thursday: Team Brainstorm Meeting & A Walk to Nymans

Thursdays tend to consist of various projects as well as internal meetings. As it’s nearing the end of the week, we have a Creative Team meeting, where we go through existing work, anything that is ready to send to clients, and any new projects we are about to start, making sure everyone is on track.

Something I’ve been enjoying during my lunch breaks is going to Nyman’s gardens for a walk. I’ve realised how important it is to have a change of scenery, even for a short while during the work day. It allows me to switch off for a bit, giving me a fresh perspective when I get back to work for the afternoon.

Friday: Creative Team Catch-Up & Coffee Run

Fridays are for wrapping up any outstanding work and ensuring everything is completed for the week. It’s also another opportunity for the Creative Team to reflect on the week’s work and discuss what’s coming next.

Of course, no Friday is complete without a coffee run! I love popping over the road with a colleague to the café to pick up coffees for the team, it's a great way to end the week!

Overall, being an apprentice in marketing and design is a mixture of learning, creating, and collaborating. Each week brings new experiences, and I’m constantly growing and expanding my skills as I work on exciting projects. I’ve already learnt so much from the Storm12 team, and I’m really looking forward to working on new projects, meeting new clients and further developing my skills over the course of my apprenticeship.
